Major change to Qantas Frequent Flyer, points devalued.

Qantas Frequent Flyer Program Changes

Qantas has announced a significant devaluation of its frequent flyer points, making it more challenging for passengers to book reward seats in premium cabins. Starting August 5, a business class reward seat from Perth to London will require 151,800 points, up from 126,500, while a first-class seat will cost 227,800 points, increased from 189,800. Other major routes, including flights from Brisbane or Sydney to Los Angeles, will see a 20% increase in points required. Modest increases are applied to domestic and trans-Tasman travel. Despite the rise, members can book at current rates until the changes take effect. Qantas asserts this is necessary to maintain its frequent flyer program and address the declining earnings in its loyalty business. To encourage bookings, Qantas is also offering a promotion providing double points or status credits. However, experts note that such promotions often result in members spending more to achieve desirable status levels, and suggest attention to terms and conditions.
