Explosive growth in air capacity reflects rising trade, tourism, and business travel across key Asian markets

Flight capacity between Australia and India has surged by 346% compared to pre-pandemic levels, the largest increase of any country, driven by growing economic ties, strong VFR (visiting friends and relatives) demand, and enhanced connectivity—particularly through a new codeshare between Air India and Virgin Australia.

Other major increases include:

  • Vietnam: up 263%, boosted by trade growth and carriers like Vietjet entering the market.

  • South Korea: up 153%.

  • Indonesia: up 128%.

  • Singapore: up 107%.

These figures significantly outpace the global post-COVID average of 103%.

Additionally, business class bookings are up 45% year-on-year for the second half of 2024, with notable increases to Hong Kong (60%) and China (57%), partly due to China’s new 30-day visa-free policy.

The expansion reflects growing trade across Asia, especially with ASEAN nations, whose two-way trade with Australia now totals $192.9 billion annually, outpacing trade with the US and EU. Airlines are responding with more direct routes, codeshare deals, and premium seating options—benefiting both business and leisure travellers.
